The second season of Norwegian Lykkeland/State of Happiness builds on the enormous prosperity that oil extraction brought to Norway. Leading actor Anna Hellevik - excellently played by the unknown Stavanger native Anne Regine Ellingsaeter - works for the Oil Directorate and is the conscience of the series in a ruthless industry in the mid-1970s.
But Lykkeland offers much more; emancipation of working women in the 1970s, strong American influences, the religion that still occupies an important position, family and relationship problems... Learning how to deal with the great wealth that comes with oil extraction is not easy, it turns out.
It produces a beautiful and lively image of the time that may be a bit too soap opera for some. Fortunately, emotions are never unnecessarily magnified or exploited. The acting, design and moral dilemmas make Lykkeland a gripping drama.
