"Happiness land" gives a good picture of the socio-economic consequences of globalization. Traditionally, fishing and farming have been the main sources of income in and around Stavanger, in southwestern Norway. When an American multinational starts drilling for oil, the lives of the local population are turned upside down. Some resist it; others try to get a piece of the pie.
There was already a social antagonism between the families of Christian and his fiancé Anna. His father is the director of a fishing company in town; she is a farmer's daughter from a rural village. Amorous and familial family issues are discussed, but also the consequences of excessive alcohol consumption and the resulting guilt. Norwegian folk music has to make way for American rock.
Norwegian and English are spoken alternately. The Norwegian actors are doing well. Visually, the underwater images are especially beautiful. Sometimes there is a resourceful matchcut. Right after the diving bell hits the seabed, it jumps towards falling drinking glasses on a table. Apparently there was also filmed in the Belgian Lint, but those will be indoor shots.
