The 4-part Innocent is written by screenwriter and producer Chris Lang. Along masterpiece is the series Unforgotten. Innocent tells the story of a convict who spent years in prison, but is eventually acquitted. Sally Wright (Katherine Kelly) has to pick up her life after her acquittal in S2. That's not easy. Slowly the mystery unfolds; If she wasn't the perpetrator of the murder of a 16-year-old schoolboy, who was? And is she innocent? In Innocent you can tick all the boxes: good actors, beautiful scenery (Lake District), decent screenplay and enough mystery and red herrings.
Still, Innocent is a bit disappointing. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that the series had to be shifted to the fall in the spring of 2020 during the pandemic. Including the two weeks of quarantine for the actors. While it was obviously filmed in the fall, the screenplay sometimes talks about April. We forgive that. What bothers me more is that some storylines are forced or over the top; the private situation of DCI Mike Braithwaite for example. The season finale also comes completely out of the blue. An unexpected, contrived plot is not necessarily a good plot. In short, it's all familiar quality but also pretty same old, same old.
