Early Edition was a fun and above all original series that came on TV in the late 90s. It's about Gary Hobson(Kyle Chandler), a Chicago stockbroker, who inexplicably gets tomorrow's newspaper today. Gary quits his job and then works every day to prevent disasters and accidents, big and small. He gets help from his best friend Chuck (Fisher Stevens) and his former secretary, the blind Marissa (Shanesia Davis). Early Edition was nice because no episode was the same because the newspaper is different every day. The first two seasons were the best. Then Fisher Stevens left, ending the troika that was the face of the show. He was replaced by 3 characters the simple good-natured Patrick Quinn (Billie Worley) and the boy Henry and his mother Erica (Kristy Swanson). As is often the case, TV and movie producers think that smart and wise-cracking children are fun, but in reality it usually turns out to be the opposite. Criticism mounted and viewers dropped out. In Season 4 Henry and Erica were gone but the lost viewers could not be regained and the series was canceled at the end of Season 4.

As a test, I once read a newspaper asking, "What could have been prevented if I'd known the day before?" In most cases the answer was: nothing. You can't change anything about wars, politics and lawsuits. It would sometimes only be possible with regional news: a fire, an accident or a crime. Gary Hobson does have problems with that. Sometimes people don't believe him, or he has to explain how he got that information.

The basic premise is that the future is not predestined, but that you can turn things around for the better by taking action. In principle, the foreknowledge may not be used for self-enrichment, although this is not explicitly stated anywhere. It's not clear where Gary gets his income from. Would he secretly play the Lotto? Chuck works as a stock broker, but mainly provides assistance and comic variety.

Kyle Chandler looks like he walked out of a shaving soap commercial. Shanésia Davis has the right eye movements to appear believable. She did field research at an institute for the blind to prepare for her role. Pairing a clairvoyant with a blind man was a clever idea. She is a pure confidant; they may have thought an interracial relationship was too risky.

If you pause the image, you can see that a headline often doesn't match the article below. The city of Chicago offers suitable backdrops for scenes of crowds and action. It is an entertaining series with suspense, humor and nice actors, where you don't have to think too hard.

Favorite Episodes: 3, 4, 13, 18, 23.
