From the treasure trove of the NPO comes Die Zweiflers, a six-part German drama series about a German-Jewish family and their delicatessen business in contemporary Frankfurt. Old secrets, generational conflicts, and clashing traditions provide the material for a kind of Jewish variant of The Sopranos. Along the way, the series aims to touch upon major themes: identity, family, history, and the question of how a burdened past impacts the present. It sounds promising. The result is disappointing.

The award-winning series — winner of the Best Series award at Canneseries 2024 — lacks precisely what a family drama like this needs: sharpness and persuasiveness. The tragicomic tone is numbing rather than uplifting. It rarely becomes funny, and moreover, the humor drains the tension from the dramatic scenes.

Even as a family drama, Die Zweiflers struggles to stay on course. The series is messy, loud, and over the top, with characters that mostly take up space but make little impression. Everyone has troubles, everyone has secrets, and everyone talks over each other. What could have been a witty and biting dramedy gets stuck as a lame comedy about a lot of fuss over nothing. Ironically, only the final episode shows how good Die Zweiflers could have been: sharper, more serious, and finally with something at stake. Much too late.
