Great mini-series about the nuclear disaster after an explosion at a nuclear power plant in Chernobyl in 1986. Obviously a fascinating story that comes through here in many facets. Impressive to see the magnitude of the disaster, and especially the power of the radioactive radiation and the entire clean-up operation and the people who had to deal with it. Furthermore, the role of the government also plays a major role here. Excellent acting and beautiful music (ominous sounds by Hildur Guðnadóttir).

Very good.

It's interesting and fascinating to watch anyway because a nuclear disaster and its consequences are relatively unknown territory, especially because it actually happened and relatively little is known about it by the general public.

But what I find almost even better than showing the whole disaster and its aftermath is showing the context of Soviet culture in which all of this happened. Inevitably, of course, because everything that happens - not only the occurrence of the disaster, but also all the denial and the heroism of the people who sacrifice themselves afterwards - could only have taken place within such a society. So it actually makes it doubly interesting to watch. In addition, I think the whole 80s atmosphere is very well portrayed when it comes to haircuts, glasses and the stark Soviet interiors.

Very well put together in all respects.

5*

PS. For those who like; there is also a podcast about each episode (The Chernobyl Podcast) in which the makers talk about the choices that have been made, what is completely truthful and what might be less, etc. Highly recommended to listen to.

Difficult to assess. Clearly well made and the setting/acting are of a masterly level. No expense has been spared to bring the Chernobyl and Pripyat area to life. In that sense, I understand that many people are enchanted by this production, because it is definitely a compelling story. But along the way, a certain irritation crept over me at how the complex geopolitical histories of the Soviet Union and Ukraine are narrowed into an America that looks to itself. The few subtle analogies with the Trump presidency. Like hammering in the tagline 'What is the cost of lies?' as an alarmist message to outline the danger of populist and anti-scientific politics. Heroes and villains are magnified, and there's even room for a comedic 'buddy cop' dynamic between a scientist and an army figure. And that while the miniseries - ironically enough - itself also perpetuates mythologies, such as a spectacular helicopter crash or the poetic events surrounding the Bridge of Death. 'Chernobyl' (2019) is not very self-reflective towards its own 'lies', while it presents itself as historically accurate and scientifically substantiated.
