Another Life plot

Another Life focuses on astronaut Niko Breckinridge who does everything in his power to search for extraterrestrial intelligence. She leads a team on a mission to explore the origins of an alien artifact that mysteriously ended up on Earth. As Niko and her young crew investigate, they face unimaginable dangers for what could be their final mission.

Zojuist de laatste aflevering gezien en mijn hemel wat is dit ongelooflijk slecht en ongeloofwaardig allemaal. Wie stuurt er zo'n groep hitsige sukkels de ruimte in voor de belangrijkste missie die de mensheid ooit heeft ondernomen? Dit zijn echt de meest onprofessionele astronauten die je ooit in je leven gaat zien. Om nog maar te zwijgen over de belabberde wereldopbouw. Tussen neus en lippen door hoor je bijvoorbeeld dat Korea zich blijkbaar heeft verenigd en dat grote delen van de wereld onder water zijn gelopen of zoiets. Zo hoor je in elke aflevering weer iets van het tijdperk waarin Another Life zich zou moeten afspelen. Het probleem is alleen dat je nooit hoort in welk jaar we ons nu precies bevinden. Dan is er nog de technologie. In een van de eerste beelden zie je een soort holografische tv, maar daarachter staat een koffiezetapparaat uit het jaar nul. Waar ik me ook kapot aan ergerde was het soma-systeem. "Hé, ik heb een idee: laten we de ruimte ingaan met ongeteste technologie waarvan we geen idee hebben wat het effect op het menselijk brein kan zijn! BRILJANT!" Mijn advies? Blijf als sciencefiction fan hier ver vandaan. De enige 'reddende' factor is misschien Katee Sackhoff. Zij weet in deze dampende drol nog enigszins te overtuigen. Daarnaast zijn de gebeurtenissen op aarde ook wel aardig, maar tonen verder aan dat het deel in de ruimte nogal ruk is. Na twee afleveringen hoop je dat het hele schip gewoon in een zwart gat vliegt. 0,5* voor Katee Sackhoff + 0,5* voor de scenes op aarde + 0,5* voor de lachspieren die ik soms niet in bedwang kon houden, dus: 1,5*

Just watched the last episode and my goodness this is all incredibly bad and unbelievable. Who would send such a group of horny suckers into space for the most important mission ever undertaken by mankind? These are truly the most unprofessional astronauts you will ever see in your life. Not to mention the lousy world construction.

For example, you can hear between nose and lips that Korea has apparently united and that large parts of the world have been submerged or something like that. So in every episode you hear something of the era in which Another Life should take place. The problem is that you never hear exactly what year we are in.

Then there is the technology. In one of the first images you see a kind of holographic TV, but behind it is a coffee machine from the year zero. What also annoyed me was the soma-system. "Hey, I have an idea: Let's go into space with untested technology that we have no idea what effect it could have on the human brain! BRILLIANT!"

My advice? As a science fiction fan, stay far away from this. The only 'saving' factor may be Katee Sackhoff. She manages to convince somewhat in this steaming turd. In addition, the events on Earth are also nice, but also show that the part in space is rather jerky. After two episodes, you hope the whole ship just flies into a black hole.

0.5* for Katee Sackhoff + 0.5* for the scenes on Earth + 0.5* for the laughing muscles that I sometimes couldn't control, so: 1.5*

Ik herken wel wat zowie en blokhut1 schrijven. Het is een slecht soap aftreksel van Star Trek. Deze ietwat sociaal gefrustreerde crew getuigt niet echt van intelligentie of enig inzicht van professionaliteit waaruit zou kunnen blijken dat zij de aardebewoners moeten redden (en er is maar 1 kans !). Had ik deze crew moeten samenstellen dan had ik deze samenstelling nooit gekozen. Kansloze missie. Maar ja, er moet natuurlijk wel diversiteit door de strot geduwd worden (en ik heb echt nog geprobeerd om daar doorheen te kijken en er geen aandacht aan te besteden) dus daar laten de acteurs zich ook door leiden. Ook een soort profilering van zichzelf als acteurs: ‘Wij zijn sterke LHBTi’ers, vrouwen, Transgenders en Afro-Amerikanen’ ! En juist die gefrustreerde poging tot gelijkwaardige profilering maakt deze karakteriseringen alleen maar zwakker. Jammer ! Ik besefte ook hoe knap Star Trek dit vanuit de jaren 60 juist op een ongedwongen manier die diversiteit bij de kijkers bracht. Jammer dus van eigenlijk het hele SF verhaal en de serie faalt dus volledig voor mij. Katee Sackhoff acteert nog wel redelijk maar haar mimiek spreekt mij niet aan (kan zij niks aan doen maar ik ook niet) waardoor ik geen ‘band’ kreeg met de hoofdrolspeelster. Ik ben dus afgehaakt na aflevering 4. Er dreigde daar een soort triootje te gaan ontstaan waar ik in SF niet zoveel mee heb. Lijkt mij wel trouwens heerlijk om het eens gewichtloos te doen alleen eindig je vrij snel samen bij een muur of zo. Tel daarbij de visuele beelden van het gewichtloze rondzwevende zweet en andere menselijke nattigheid en ik.. Nou, nee, laat maar. Ach. Op naar Casa del Papa. Dat is wat realistischer..

I do recognize what zowie and blokhut1 write. It's a bad soap opera from Star Trek. This somewhat socially frustrated crew doesn't really show any intelligence or any insight of professionalism that might show they need to save the Earth's inhabitants (and there's only one chance!).

If I had to put together this crew, I would never have chosen this composition. A hopeless mission. But yes, of course diversity has to be pushed down the throat (and I really tried to see through it and not pay attention to it) so that's what the actors are guided by. Also a kind of profiling of themselves as actors: 'We are strong LGBTI people, women, Transgenders and African Americans'! And it is precisely this frustrated attempt at equal profiling that only weakens these characterizations. Unfortunately ! I also realized how clever Star Trek this from the 60s in a casual way brought diversity to the viewers.

It's a shame about the entire SF story and the series therefore completely fails for me.

Katee Sackhoff still acts reasonably well, but her facial expression doesn't appeal to me (she can't help it and neither can I) so I didn't get a 'bond' with the lead actress.

So I dropped out after episode 4. There was a threat of a kind of threesome that I don't have much with in SF. By the way, I think it would be great to do it weightless, only you end up together quite quickly at a wall or something. Add to that the visual images of the weightless floating sweat and other human wetness and I... Well, no, never mind.

Ah. On to Casa del Papa. That's a bit more realistic
