In the summer of 2003, two emaciated young men appeared in the Canadian town of Vernon, British Columbia. They claimed to have grown up completely off-the-grid in the wilderness their entire lives, never having seen a school, doctor, or government agency. While the local community warmly welcomed the brothers and helped them integrate, journalists and authorities became obsessed with their mysterious past. As investigators dug deeper, however, disturbing questions arose about the veracity of their story and the extent to which people are willing to believe a story simply because they want it to be true.
