Dat Ene Woord - Feyenoord plot

Feyenoord. Club of the people, located on the Rotterdam Maas but with a fan base throughout the Netherlands. And far beyond. Feyenoord is now opening all doors for the first time in its 112-year history. The club will be followed from within in the 2020/21 season, in which the utmost is demanded of the trainer, players, management and supporters. As the club grapples with the massive impact of the COVID19 crisis, the present collides with the past in a quest for a brighter future. Unique images from, among other things, the changing room and board room bring the club and all the protagonists closer to the public than ever before.

The first episode has a very interesting storyline, in which you see on the one hand a management that wants to innovate with all their power and wants to drag the club into the twenty-first century (but not quite sure how) and then the ultimate old school coach Dick Advocaat is introduced when he puts his SUV in a parking space (fantastic scene). This almost fictional scenario naturally clashes from the start and delivers quite a bit of spectacle in the first few episodes.

During the series, however, this storyline is let go - the contracting of the progressive trainer Arne Slot also seemed like a footnote - and it mainly becomes a match after match report with images behind the scenes. You will be especially surprised about the lack of trainer qualities of Dick 'Come on' Advocaat and especially about the unstoppable blankness of his permanent assistant Cor Pot. Furthermore, the series was filled with short portraits of players (who were sometimes quite nice), a select group of supporters was followed and every now and then a large drawer was opened with clichés, as is usual when it comes to Feyenoord.

In short, an entertaining look behind the scenes with certainly not a rosy picture of reality, but too many missed opportunities - empty stadiums didn't help either - to be really uplifting. There seems to be a second season, but because that decision came too late and won't follow this current season, it feels like mustard after dinner. The contrast between the two seasons could have made Dat One Word really special.
