Like HBO has put the historical crime genre back on the map with Boardwalk Empire and Deadwood; for example, the BBC is creating a production that can compete with the acclaimed American works in terms of scale and acting fireworks. It's clear from the sizzling opening scene that quite a few Pounds have been thrown in to bring the atmosphere of old Birmingham to life. Cillian Murphy galloping on his horse on a huge set, on which the extras are crawling like rats to imitate the bustle of the filthy industrial town. The soundtrack features Brit-rock that evokes the anachronistic atmosphere of the infamous miners' strikes of the 1980s. Peaky Blinders is punk without the mohawk, but with the shaved hair, the slacks and the checkered caps from that period. Fuck the system! (in British)

Although the plot takes some forced, unlikely turns - partly because not all storylines are given space in the six episodes - it remains the raw style that drags you as a viewer from start to finish in this highly amusing historical epic. The Peaky Blinders are an entertaining group of street thugs who have worked themselves up to the hard-core criminals who rule the local ghettos. Their tough macho talk and violent outbursts are much more dictated by the female relatives behind the scenes than it seems. Whether it's really realistic I can't say, but the series is written in such a way that the powerful female roles are at least as influential as their male relatives. The idiosyncratic style and strong female roles result in a series that feels surprisingly historically accurate and yet has a cool contemporary look.

Fine raw crime drama with a lot of potential for several seasons. Excellent cast, beautiful camera work and a special soundtrack full of anachronistic rough folk songs. A bit on the slow side here and there and I had to get into it for a while, but soon the characters start to intrigue and the plot lines captivate. In any case, the season finale leaves you wanting more.

Don't **** with the Peaky Blinders.

Season 1 starts off slow, but also gets interesting right away. The basis may not be original, a family that tries to move up in society through illegal means and thus starts small. The idea is to first earn a lot of money in an illegal way, in order to eventually get a lot of money through a legal way.

The series makes its mark mainly with the setting and the acting. A lot of money has been invested in bringing the old industrial town of Birmingham to life. Cillian Murphy immediately makes his mark as Thomas Shelby, but Paul Anderson, Sam Neill and Helen McCrory certainly do too.

Season 1 seems like a bit of an introductory season with a decent antagonist like Campbell, but also a totally meaningless antagonist like Billy Kimber. That aspect doesn't quite come through for me, just like the subplot 'Grace'.
