Nice ending to a series that excelled in capturing the era and chemistry between the characters, where the interaction between Shaw and Ingleby got better and better and came to a good climax in this season. Too bad Shaw got too old for the series (as he said himself he didn't want to play an elderly police officer) because he has a lot of charisma and always plays with a lot of flair, something that is lacking in many English detectives.

I don't think it's bad, absolutely not, but the biggest problem is George Gently himself and maybe Shaw too. 'His' George is very superhero material on which all kinds of clichés have been unleashed. The business and the atmosphere are okay, but they remain detective stories. Opponent John (Lee Ingleby) is also full of clichés, but does it well nonetheless.
Most seasons so far (4 eps to go) get 2.5*, except s3, of which 'Gently Evil' was wonderfully creepy.
