With The Morning Show, Apple launched the streaming service Apple TV+. The all-star cast is promising: Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon and Billy Crudup. The Morning Show (TMS) refers to American morning television, financed by lenders who have their own morals. This results in a number of storylines that, among other things, deal with the question of the extent to which an owner may interfere with the journalistic content of the program. TMS is more drama than comedy. However, with a little imagination you could call the hysterical behavior of presenter Alex Levy (Aniston) in the first episodes comic. She won an Emmy for it. I thought it was over-the-top.

The Morning Show is based on #MeToo. Co-host Mitch Kessler (Steve Carell) is accused of transgressive behavior. In TMS, the light not only shines on the female victims, but the male perspective is also highlighted. Or as the TMS executive producer puts it in the series, "The MeToo movement is an exaggerated correction of centuries of bad behavior that men like us have nothing to do with." The tone is set.

Frankly, The Morning Show was a tiny bit disappointing. While the acting is generally good (Billy Crudup stars), TMS is a thoroughly American production; superficial, smooth and not very subtle. Similar series in theme or setting such as The Loudest Voice (about the life of Fox News founder Roger Ailes), the British Press and the Norwegian Heksejagt/Witch Hunt are all better than TMS. Nevertheless, the series looks quickly away and there is plenty of material for a second season.

When her popular co-host Mitch Kessler (Steve Carell) is fired for sexual misconduct, Alex Levy (Jennifer Aniston) fights to keep her job as a newscaster. Strong drama with excellent roles for both Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, although it is mainly the male leads that impress. Carell is great here, as is Billy Crudup as a slick but slick producer. The lead role for the #MeToo event initially makes one fear the worst, but it soon emerges as a sharply written and intelligently developed series, full of great dialogue and surprising developments. I'm curious how they will pick themselves up in the second season after the excruciatingly exciting finale of this first series.
