Modern Family plot

Modern Family follows the families of Jay Pritchett, his daughter Claire Dunphy and his son Mitchell Pritchett. Claire is a real housewife, Jay is married to a younger woman and has a teenage son, and Mitchell and his boyfriend have adopted a Vietnamese baby.

Eindelijk begonnen aan het eerste seizoen! Het seizoen heeft sterke en mindere afleveringen maar heeft de potentie nog steeds te groeien. Ben benieuwd naar seizoen 2! 3,5*

Ik heb hier wel eens een aflevering van voorbij zien komen op Comedy Central, maar ik voel er nooit zo veel voor om bij aflevering x van seizoen 4 een serie te gaan volgen. Uit nieuwsgierigheid hoe het allemaal begon en wegens de vele positieve geluiden omtrent deze serie, heb ik me maar eens aan het eerste seizoen gewaagd. Ik vind Modern Family best een aardige sitcom. Mijn interesse werd vooral gewekt doordat de hoofdrol gespeeld wordt door Ed O'Neill, die ik geweldig vind in Married with Children. Leuk om te zien dat hij nog zo'n succesrol heeft weten te bemachtigen en hij doet het ook gewoon prima hier. Ty Burrell springt er inderdaad qua humor wel een beetje uit, maar ik moet zeggen dat de gehele cast goed op dreef is. Het probleem is alleen dat ik veel komisch bedoelde momenten niet zozeer écht grappig vond. Het kijkt allemaal prima weg, maar je kijkt een komedie toch meestal om te lachen. Het mag wel gezegd worden dat ik de tweede helft van dit seizoen aanzienlijk sterker vond dan de eerste helft. Zo rond aflevering 10 begon ik me af te vragen of het überhaupt de moeite waard was om nog verder te kijken, maar de aflevering waarin Phil vast komt te zitten in het toilet vond ik dusdanig leuk dat het mij overtuigde om nog niet te stoppen. De daaropvolgende afleveringen bevielen stukken beter en naar het einde van het seizoen toe stapelen zich toch wel steeds meer grappige momenten op. Vanmorgen ook al begonnen aan seizoen 2 en het lijkt er vooralsnog op dat de stijgende lijn wordt vastgehouden. Ik ben benieuwd! Dit eerste seizoen is een leuk begin, maar hopelijk nog niet het hoogtepunt. 3*

I've seen an episode of this on Comedy Central, but I've never felt the urge to watch a series on episode x of season 4. Out of curiosity how it all started and because of the many positive comments about this series, I decided to try the first season.

I think Modern Family is quite a nice sitcom. My interest was especially piqued by the lead role played by Ed O'Neill, whom I love in Married with Children. Nice to see that he has managed to get such a successful role and he is also doing just fine here. Ty Burrell does indeed stand out a bit in terms of humor, but I have to say that the entire cast is on a roll.

The only problem is that I didn't really find many funny moments that were really funny. It all looks fine, but you usually watch a comedy to laugh. It can be said that I found the second half of this season considerably stronger than the first half. Around episode 10 I started to wonder if it was even worth watching further, but the episode where Phil gets stuck in the toilet I liked so much that it convinced me not to stop just yet. The subsequent episodes were much better and towards the end of the season more and more funny moments pile up.

Season 2 has already started this morning and it seems that the upward trend is still being maintained. I'm curious! This first season is a nice start, but hopefully not the highlight yet.

Leuk. Gekeken vanwege Ed O'Neill, die ik natuurlijk nog ken uit Married with Children, maar omdat ik zelf een latina vriendin heb, ook vanwege Sofía Vergara, die volgens vriendinlief soms echt reageert als haar eigen moeder. Ik had er van te voren niet teveel verwachtingen van, maar dat bleek alleszins mee te vallen. Allereerst is deze serie grappig genoeg om leuk te zijn zonder lachband. De manier waarop gefilmd wordt doet een beetje denken aan The Office, waar er ook vaak ingezoomd wordt op het gezicht van een karakter als een ander karakter iets ongemakkelijks zegt. En ongemakkelijke situaties zijn er genoeg, want de serie is af en toe prettig politiek incorrect, met name O'Neills karakter richting zijn Colombiaanse vrouw en zijn homofiele zoon, maar ook vanwege de sociale onhandigheid van het personage Phil. En verder is het homostel Mitch en Cam af en toe hilarisch, met name de laatstgenoemde. Sowieso is er een fijne chemie tussen de personages. 3*.

And awkward situations abound, as the series is pleasantly politically incorrect at times, particularly O'Neill's disposition towards his Colombian wife and gay son, but also because of Phil's social awkwardness. And furthermore, the gay couple Mitch and Cam is occasionally hilarious, especially the latter. There is also a nice chemistry between the characters. 3*.
