Modern Family plot

Modern Family follows the families of Jay Pritchett, his daughter Claire Dunphy and his son Mitchell Pritchett. Claire is a real housewife, Jay is married to a younger woman and has a teenage son, and Mitchell and his boyfriend have adopted a Vietnamese baby.

Prima seizoen, maar niet heel bijzonder. Phil is uiteraard nog steeds het leukste personage uit de serie, maar ik vond dit seizoen Jay en Gloria ook verrassend leuk. Er zaten ook weer wat uitgemolken afleveringen tussen: het standaard valentijn verhaal van Phil en Claire, het zoveelste bezoek aan een potentiële school en natuurlijk kwam Fizbo ook weer langs. Is er trouwens iemand die Manny een leuk personage vindt? Hij heeft me letterlijk nog als enige nog nooit laten lachen in deze serie.

Great season, but nothing special. Phil is obviously still the best character in the series, but I also surprisingly liked Jay and Gloria this season. There were also some milked-out episodes in between: the standard Valentine story of Phil and Claire, the umpteenth visit to a potential school and of course Fizbo came by again.

Is there anyone who likes Manny as a character? He has literally never made me laugh in this series.

Alles gezien van Modern Family wat tot dusver op Netflix beschikbaar is. Al bij het eerste seizoen valt te lezen dat ik niet meteen laaiend enthousiast was over deze sitcom, maar uiteindelijk vond ik het wel steeds leuker worden. Zo rond seizoen 4, 5 en 6 lag voor mij het hoogtepunt. Seizoen 5 is mijn favoriet, omdat daar meer sprake was van een overkoepelende verhaallijn. Inmiddels vind ik het niveau wel weer wat afgenomen. Op zich kijkt het nog steeds prima weg, maar er zijn wel echt enkele zaken die me zijn gaan tegenstaan. Ik krijg bij de afgelopen seizoenen meermaals de indruk dat ik naar iets zit te kijken wat ik eerder gezien heb. De onderlinge conflicten waar de personages mee worstelen keren telkens opnieuw terug: Cam voelt zich niet gesteund door Mitchell (vrijwel iedere aflevering!), Claire is bang voor de mening van haar vader, Claire en Gloria zijn afgunstig op elkaar, Alex voelt zich niet begrepen, Manny voelt zich niet begrepen, Jay heeft moeite met Phil, Jay heeft moeite met de homoseksualiteit van Mitchell... Dit zijn gewoon zaken die meermaals per seizoen terugkeren. Aan het einde van een aflevering maken ze het goed en beloven ze dat ze voortaan meer begrip voor elkaar zullen tonen en even later gaat het weer mis. En wat hebben ze in godsnaam met Luke gedaan? Als kind was hij overduidelijk de zoon van Phil, maar dat is tegenwoordig nauwelijks zichtbaar. Begint een onsympathiek figuur te worden naar mijn mening. Dat gezegd hebbende, snap ik dat Modern Family nog steeds een lopende serie is. De cast maakt veel goed; er is absoluut geen gebrek aan energie van hun kant en het is overduidelijk dat zij hun personages door en door kennen. Ik kan ook nog geregeld lachen om hun capriolen, met name om die van Phil, maar ik zou het wel fijn vinden als de constante herhaling wat meer gemeden zouden worden. Ik zal de resterende vervolgseizoenen zeker een kans geven als ze op mijn pad komen. Luchtig popcornvermaak is het immers nog steeds wel. 3*

Seen everything from Modern Family available on Netflix so far. Already in the first season it can be read that I was not immediately enthusiastic about this sitcom, but in the end I found it more and more fun. Around season 4, 5 and 6 was the highlight for me. Season 5 is my favorite because there was more of an overarching storyline.

Now I think the level has decreased a bit. In itself it still looks great, but there are really some things that have started to disappoint me. Over the past few seasons, I often get the impression that I'm watching something I've seen before. The conflicts between the characters that the characters struggle with recur time and again: Cam feels unsupported by Mitchell (almost every episode!), Claire fears her father's opinion, Claire and Gloria envy each other, Alex feels misunderstood Manny feels misunderstood, Jay has trouble with Phil, Jay has trouble with Mitchell's homosexuality... These are just things that recur several times a season. At the end of an episode they make it up and promise that they will show more understanding for each other from now on, and moments later things go wrong again. And what the hell did they do to Luke? As a kid, he was obviously Phil's son, but that's barely visible these days. Starting to become an unsympathetic figure in my opinion.

That said, I get that Modern Family is still an ongoing series. The cast makes up for a lot; there is absolutely no lack of energy on their part and it is obvious that they know their characters inside out. I can also regularly laugh at their antics, especially Phil's, but I would like it if the constant repetition would be avoided a bit more. I will definitely give the remaining follow-up seasons a chance if they come my way. After all, it's still airy popcorn entertainment.
