Over the Garden Wall plot

"Over the Garden Wall" is the story of two brothers, Wirt and Greg, who get lost in the Unknown, a strange forest that seems disconnected from the rest of the world. With the help of a wise old woodcutter and the moody thrush Beatrice, Wirt and Greg travel through this strange land, hoping to find their way home. The underlying theme of the journey is that both brothers look for direction in different ways: where Wirt gets lost in his own thoughts, Greg gets lost because of his constant wonder and pleasure in the world.

A must for lovers of Gravity Falls.

There are a lot of similarities between this miniseries and Gravity Falls. Both are set in a strange, mysterious world with dark undertones, but nevertheless remain cheerful. And the characters of the series are also very similar. Like Dipper and Mabel, Wirt and Greg are a combination of two types: Wirt is intelligent but fearful and indecisive, Greg is cheerful and active but doesn't think twice before doing something - two types who contrast, but in the end turn out well. just like in Gravity Falls. And the other main character, Beatrice, is somewhat reminiscent of Stan: sarcastic and self-centered, but with a good heart. So many similarities.

But there are also differences, and those are the reasons I ended up liking Gravity Falls clearly better. The main difference lies in the design and music, and by extension the atmosphere. The atmosphere of Over the Garden Wall is a lot more old-fashioned: the setting is a lot less modern, much more old-fashioned, and the music is jazzy instead of cheerful and mysterious (a bit Bioshock-esque). And the modern atmosphere of Gravity Falls suits me personally better. In addition, Over the Garden Wall has a number of musical moments where the characters start singing, and you should not touch me with that.

In short, Over the Garden Wall is a pretty entertaining miniseries: the combination of characters is also entertaining here, it's pretty well written and the mysterious world is portrayed reasonably well. But the atmosphere is a bit too corny for my taste, and that's why it just doesn't reach the level of Gravity Falls. 2.75*
