It must have been really good then, but by today's standards still more comical than really good, all the extra sounds with accompanying text when blows are dealt, you can't call it really good. Still relatively comical.

In the 1950s, TV entered many households and countless superheroes such as Superman, Zorro and The Lone Ranger were the protagonists in successful TV adaptations. In the mid-1960s, DC Comics struck a deal with American TV studio ABC to bring the hero Batman to the small screen as well. The first episode appeared in 1966 and the series was a success from the start and has remained so to this day.

Several Batman villains pass in review in this series. The most notable are Cesar Romero as the Joker, Burgess Meredith as the Penguin, Frank Gorshin as The Riddler, and Julie Newmar as Catwoman. Although the series is mainly seen as camp, the humor of the series is still solid. Adam West and Burt Ward are quite witty as Batman and Robin on this one. The decors look a bit old-fashioned nowadays, but at the time Batman was one of the most expensive TV series ever, which was also one of the reasons to stop the series after 3 seasons. The music is excellent and Neal Hefti's TV tune is now legendary.

Thanks to its success, a feature film was released in the summer of 1966 and two more TV seasons followed.

Some episodes are fun and original, others less so, especially the character Tut was quite boring.

The series clearly doesn't take itself very seriously, and relies heavily on extreme stereotyping of characters who clearly enjoy playing their roles. The obedient obedience to authority is very obvious.
