Rules of the Game season 1

In the stream of post-#metoo films and series, the four-part British office drama Rules of The Game also makes a comeback. Whistleblower Maya Benshaw (Rakhee Thakrar - The Girl Before, Sex Education) is the new HR manager and comes across many disturbing cases within the family business Fly Dynamics. Unfortunately, watching Rules of the Game feels like reading the news in headlines; subtlety is lacking and nothing is left to the imagination. Moreover, so many topics are discussed that Rules of the Game becomes top-heavy. Less is more, also in this game.

The acting is variable. Rakhee Thakrar is not very believable in her role as a shaky whistleblower, while Maxine Peake (as lead Sam) better shapes her complex character. The overcrowded and contrived scenario (episode four seems redundant) doesn't help either. I had hoped for a British equivalent of the Norwegian Heksejakt. What we see is a messy drama that, with a reference to - even that - Desperate Housewives, resembles everywhere and therefore nothing.
