Roald Dahl was the master of the story with the surprising twist. Often it is about someone who devises a plan, but then gets the lid on the nose. Marriages are usually unhappy. There is refined humor in it, but often also a gruesome side.
These TV adaptations are introduced in a dry tone by the writer himself, with the shadow of the flickering fire on his face. Due to the limited budget, you should not expect a visual spectacle. There are beautiful locations to see, such as sunny Jamaica in the first episode. They are strong stories with pointed dialogues and great acting performances.
This first season immediately contains some highlights, mainly because they are based on the original stories from the 50s and 60s. The Landlady was also in Alfred Hitchcock Presents and shows similarities with [i]Psycho[/i ]. Famous faces include John Gielgud, Joseph Cotten, Brian Blessed, José Ferrer, Susan George, Joan Collins, Wendy Hiller and Pamela Stephenson. Ron Grainer's music could be coming from a barrel organ belonging to a street performer who tells stories.
