We follow a group of young police officers fresh out of police academy. With their training behind them, they are ready for the real work. Andy, Dov, Gail, Traci and Chris trained together at police academy, fought together, drank together and slept together. Now they are faced with the reality of the big city where even the smallest beginner mistake can have the biggest consequences. But with each other's support and the help of some old hands in the trade, they learn to manage. They are ready for any challenge they will face as an agent, but it is their personal lives that could use some 'backup'.

Vijf groentjes bij de politie van Toronto worden gevolgd in dit eerste seizoen. Elk heeft z'n eigen persoonlijkheid en aanleg. Er zijn drie grote verhaallijnen: het terreinwerk, het politievak en de privélevens. Op het terrein bestrijden ze straatcriminaliteit, huiselijk geweld en overlast. Dat levert conflicten, actie en benarde situaties op. Soms wordt het grappig, bijvoorbeeld wanneer zo'n onzekere beginneling een stel zware jongens in de boeien moet slaan. Elke rookie wordt begeleid door een meer ervaren politieofficier. De ene werkt volgens het boekje; de andere volgt z'n intuïtie. Extra spannend wordt het wanneer ze undercover gaan. De politie wordt sympathiek voorgesteld. Er is weinig corruptie, racisme of onnodig geweld. Het zou bijna een wervingsfilmpje kunnen zijn, al komen ook de harde kanten van het vak naar voren: vermaningen, conflicten tussen collega's, rivaliteit, onderzoekscommissies... Het geeft een vrij realistisch beeld van dit veeleisende maar spannende beroep. Ook het privéleven van de vijf komt aan bod. Relaties en verliefdheden op het werk zorgen voor de nodige problemen, net als familiekwesties. Andy en Sam lijken voor elkaar voorbestemd, maar ze beginnen allebei een relatie met iemand anders. De mooiste rollen zijn voor Missy Peregrym, Ben Bass en Charlotte Sullivan. Er is een goed evenwicht tussen actie en dialoog. Favoriete afleveringen: 1, 4, 6.

Five rookies at the Toronto Police Department are followed in this first season. Each has its own personality and disposition. There are three main storylines: the field work, the police profession and the private lives.

On the grounds they fight street crime, domestic violence and nuisance. This leads to conflict, action and difficult situations. Sometimes it gets funny, like when such an insecure novice has to handcuff a bunch of tough guys. Each rookie is accompanied by a more experienced police officer. One works by the book; the other follows his intuition. It becomes even more exciting when they go undercover.

The police are presented sympathetically. There is little corruption, racism or unnecessary violence. It could almost be a recruitment film, although the hard sides of the profession also come to the fore: admonitions, conflicts between colleagues, rivalries, investigative committees... It gives a fairly realistic picture of this demanding but exciting profession.

The private lives of the five are also discussed. Relationships and crushes at work cause problems, as do family issues. Andy and Sam seem destined for each other, but they both start dating someone else. The best roles are for Missy Peregrym, Ben Bass and Charlotte Sullivan. There is a good balance between action and dialogue.
