Warrior plot

The story of Warrior revolves around the young Ah Sahm. In the nineteenth century he emigrated from China to the world-famous Chinatown in San Francisco. The Chinese arrives in America during a period when serious gang wars are going on in San Francisco, the so-called Tong Wars. Ah Sahm's martial arts genius lands him a job. He goes to work as a hit man for the Chinese mafia.

Brother vs Sister. De serie Warrior ziet er netjes en verzorgd uit. Er zijn echt wel wat centjes tegenaan geknald. Voordat ik aan een nieuwe serie begin ben ik altijd nieuwsgierig naar de intro. Sommige zijn cool en of duister ect ect en weer andere wil je snel doen vergeten. De intro van Warrior is strak. Zo strak dat ik hem bij elke aflevering volledig heb uitgezeten. De serie Warrior is geschreven door Bruce Lee. Knap staaltje werk want ik doe het hem of een ander niet na. Maar omdat het verhaal al zo lang op de planken heeft gelegen voelt het op de een of andere manier gedateerd aan. En dat vind ik jammer. De serie Warrior hoef je ook niet voor het verhaal te kijken. Meerdere bendes vechten voor drugs, terrein en respect. Een verhaal dat zo oud is als de weg naar Rome. Waarom heb ik deze serie uitgezeten? De cast, de setting, de sfeer en de gevechten die uiterst goed choreografeert zijn. Ja de gevechten: de Chinezen zijn snel en tactisch, de Ieren komen gewoon met old school vuistwerk en de politie? De politie doet maar wat! Heerlijk. Na afronding van de serie Warrior had ik maar één zin in mijn hoofd: been there, done that! Een echte topscore zal de serie Warrior van mijn kant dan ook niet krijgen. Desondanks heb ik me eigen prima vermaakt met het eerste seizoen. Een tweede seizoen zal ik ook niet erg vinden. Er zijn vervelendere dingen in het leven. ***

Brother vs Sister.

The Warrior series looks neat and tidy. A few bucks have really gone into it. Before I start a new series, I'm always curious about the intro. Some are cool and or dark ect ect and others you want to quickly forget. Warrior's intro is tight. So tight that I sat it all out with every episode. The Warrior series was written by Bruce Lee. Nice piece of work because I don't imitate him or anyone else. But because the story has been on the shelves for so long, it somehow feels dated. And that disappoints me. You don't have to watch the Warrior series for the story either. Multiple gangs fight for drugs, terrain and respect. A story as old as the road to Rome. Why did I finish this series? The cast, the setting, the atmosphere and the fights are extremely well choreographed. Yes the fights: the Chinese are fast and tactical, the Irish just come with old school fisting and the police? The police are doing nothing! Great. After finishing the Warrior series, I only had one sentence in my head: been there, done that! The Warrior series will not get a real top score from my side. Nevertheless, I had a great time with the first season. I wouldn't mind a second season either. There are worse things in life.

Een serie met een zeer lange aanloopfase. Bruce Lee heeft het concept voor deze serie bedacht toen hij nog Kato speelde in The Green Hornet. De studiobazen van Warner Bros zagen het idee zitten maar vonden hem te Chinees om de hoofdrol te spelen want dat zou het Amerikaanse publiek nooit slikken. Zij verbouwde zijn idee tot de serie Kung Fu met David Carradine en dat werd een hit. Bruce Lee vertrok daarop naar Hong Kong en werd daar een filmicoon. Bruce Lee heeft nooit credits gekregen voor de serie Kung Fu en het originele idee van Lee bleef door zijn vroege dood jarenlang op de plank liggen. De serie Warrior speelt eind 19e eeuw in de Chinatown van San Francisco. Dat levert een sfeervol decor op met duistere, groezelige steegjes die allerlei louche bordelen, gokhuizen en opiumkitten. De Chinezen zijn een hechte en vooral gesloten gemeenschap die geleidt worden door dubieuze sociteiten genaamd Tongs of geheime genootschappen genaamd Triads. Deze groepen staan elkaar naar het leven en tegelijk worden al de Chinezen door de lokale bevolking naar het leven gestaan omdat ze hun banen pikken. Te midden van deze gespannen situatie verschijnt Ah Sahm, een immigrant die op zoek is naar zijn zus Xiaojing die uit China is gevlucht voor haar mishandelende echtgenoot. Ah Sahm zorgt al snel voor reuring. De serie verteld een interessant verhaal maar de uitwerking laat hier en daar te wensen over. De actiescènes zijn top maar de rest is soms wat ongeloofwaardig of matig uitgewerkt. Hoofdrolspeler Andrew Koji ontbeert het charisma dat nodig is om het hoofdpersonage te spelen. Het is moeilijk voor te stellen dat zijn verschijning voor veel opschudding zorgt en dames als een blok voor hem vallen. Hierdoor is het een vermakelijke serie maar geen geweldige mede omdat de geest van Bruce Lee boven de serie hangt waardoor ik onbewust steeds het idee heb dat het met hem erin beter was geweest dan wat het nu is. Misschien niet helemaal eerlijk van mij.

The series tells an interesting story, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. The action scenes are great but the rest is sometimes a bit unbelievable or poorly developed. Lead actor Andrew Koji lacks the charisma needed to play the lead character. It's hard to imagine his appearance causing a stir and ladies falling for him like a rock. This makes it an entertaining series but not a great one because the spirit of Bruce Lee hangs over the series, which makes me subconsciously always think that it would have been better with him in it than it is now. Maybe not quite honest of me.
