The producers behind the upcoming Scream sequel have been accused of sexism after star Neve Campbell refused to sign on for the movie due to a pay dispute.

Sidney Prescott is the main protagonist of the movie series and has been played by Campbell for over 25 years, starting with Scream in 1996.

Though Sidney appeared in 2022's Scream as a supporting character, the focus was on a new generation of characters striving to survive the murderous Ghostface.

Campbell was poised to return in Scream 6, but she has now confirmed that a pay dispute will lead to Sidney not appearing.

"Sadly I won’t be making the next Scream film," she told Deadline.

"As a woman I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream.

"I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise.

"It’s been a very difficult decision to move on. To all my Scream fans, I love you. You’ve always been so incredibly supportive to me.

"I’m forever grateful to you and to what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years."

Support for Neve Campbell

Campbell has received almost universal support for her decision including from Scream co-star Matthew Lillard, who believes there is an element of sexism in the studio not producing a worthy pay day.

“Did Tom Cruise take less money for ? F*ck no dude," Lillard, who played Stu in the original Scream, told Midnite Movie Club.

"So why is a woman supposed to take less? Why wouldn’t you pay her more as the series goes on?

"Was Scream 5 a hit or not a hit? It was a smash hit. Did they make a sh*t ton of money? Yes. Should Neve Campbell be paid for the work she’s done in five movies of a franchise? Yes, because she’s a female lead of one of the most successful horror franchises."

Writing on Twitter, Lillard said:

"The fact that Neve Campbell isn’t getting paid her worth is straight-up sexism. I think it’s horrible. There. I said. it."
