Natalie Portman is one of the most celebrated actresses of her generation, having starred in a string of smash hits and also being the recipient of an Academy Award for her performance in Black Swan.

Like every performer, though, she has had her fair share of films that have not been received well critically, at least upon release.

In an interview with Variety, Portman was asked about the mixed reception of Thor: The Dark World, as she reflected on the release of Thor: Love and Thunder which represents her major comeback to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

She explains that she has had poorly received movies before that have since become more beloved in the eyes of the public, like 1994 action thriller, Leon (also known as The Professional), which was her debut film.

“I mean, I had it with ‘The Professional’ too,” she says of Leon

“It was slaughtered critically, and now, despite having been in Marvel and ‘Star Wars’ movies, it’s the main thing people come up to me about.

"That and ‘Star Wars’ are two examples of things that when they came out, I was like, ‘Oh, my God, this is a disaster.’ And then 20 years later — actually, 30 years later for ‘The Professional’ — it’s beloved.”

Jane Foster returns in Thor: Love and Thunder

For Thor: Love and Thunder, Jane Foster returned to Thor's life, having somehow gained the power to wield Mjolnir, thus becoming The Mighty Thor herself.

The role required Portman to get into superhero shape which has never been required of her before. For her Oscar-winning role in Black Swan, she played a ballet dancer and so was asked to get as petit as possible, and this was the opposite.

“On ‘Black Swan,’ I was asked to get as small as possible,” she said.

“Here, I was asked to get as big as possible. That’s an amazing challenge — and also state of mind as a woman.

“To have this reaction and be seen as big, you realize, ‘Oh, this must be so different, to walk through the world like this. When you’re small — and also, I think, because I started as a kid — a lot of times I feel young or little or, like, a pat-on-the-head kind of person. And I present myself that way, too, because of that.”

Thor: Love and Thunder was released on 8 July and stars Chris Hemsworth, Portman, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Taika Waititi, Jaimie Alexander, Chris Pratt, Pom Klementieff, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper.

It focused on the return of Foster, who suddenly has the powers of Thor, as she and Thor deal with the threat of a deadly new villain, Gorr the God Butcher.
