Chris Evans isn't too keen on reprising his role as Captain America anytime soon as he believes it would be too "upsetting" if it didn't work out perfectly.

The actor is now one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood due to his several outings as Steve Rogers, starting with Captain America: The First Avenger which was released in 2011.

Two further movies were released in the trilogy, The Winter Soldier and Civil War, to critical and commercial acclaim, while the character also played a key role in The Avengers series.

At the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame, Rogers made the decision to travel back in time and stay in the past in order to stay with his former love, Agent Carter.

It was a perfect end to the character's arc in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

That is one of a few reasons that Evans is wary about appearing as Cap again.

"No, I don't think so. I mean it was a really unbelievable ride and the character's just so dear to me and I'm just so precious with it," he said on the Disney D23 podcast.

"To return to the role, I mean the truth is, the role isn't even mine anymore. The role is Anthony Mackie's. So, you know, even if there was a different incarnation, not as Captain America, but you know for Steve Rogers, even that would feel… I'd be very cautious, just because I love that chapter of my life professionally, personally.

"I love what those movies accomplished and to revisit it and potentially have some weird extension to that legacy would be upsetting if it didn't land. So it would require a near-perfect recipe and it may just not be in the cards."

Anthony Mackie played The Falcon in several Avengers movies and also Disney+ series Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

He will fully take on the role of Captain America in the recently announced fourth instalment of the series, Captain America: New World Order.

Captain America in Moon Knight?

Moon Knight is a Disney+ series set in the MCU focusing on a character played by Oscar Isaac.

Writer Jeremy Slater revealed that there was talk of having Evans return in a cameo as Captain America, but Marvel producer Kevin Fiege said no as he believed it would take away from the Moon Knight story.

“There were definitely different times in the writing process where we talked about cameos because cameos are one of the most fun things to discuss in a writer’s room,” Slater said to Discussing Film.

“What happens if we try to get Chris Evans back as old Captain America? You know, you sit there and play that ‘what if’ game among your writers.

“Kevin comes to us and says, ‘You know what, guys? I know everyone loves the cameos. Everyone gets excited about it. But I really think your story is standing on its own two feet right now. We really let Kevin be our guiding light for a lot of these creative decisions because he has such a good gut instinct for it.”
