Black Panther: Wakanda Forever director Ryan Coogler has explained how he took creative inspiration from Terminator 2: Judgement Day for the Black Panther sequel.
The second Black Panther movie will be released in November of 2022 and it follows the people of Wakanda who are mourning the death of King T'Challa, with the tragic death of star Chadwick Boseman in real life written into the movie.
The Wakandans must deal with a new threat in the form of Namor, who wages war against the country in defence of his own.
Coogler drew parallels between Namor's plight and that of the T-1000 in Terminator 2.
The director believes that neither are necessarily villains but are simply doing what is required of them.
"I think about them as, you know, this is a character that's going to come in conflict with my protagonist," Coogler told Collider.
"And it'd be interesting if they want the same things, but because of who they are and what shaped them, they want to get those things in different ways and their means come in conflict with each other. And it comes to a head. That's kind of like how movies I like are structured.
"Terminator 2 is a big inspiration for this movie. Big time. And you think about what T-1000 wants, and what Arnold Schwarzenegger's robot wants.
"They both want John Connor, but T-1000 wants to kill him, Arnold Schwarzenegger's character wants to protect him. That's the movie. And I look at it like that and also try to spend time with them. Not too much, you know what I'm saying?
"But enough that you understand where they're coming from and that you believe them when they make threats."
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever stars Leticia Wright, Lupita Nyong'o, Angela Bassett, Winston Duke, Danai Gurira, Florence Kasumba, Dominique Thorne, Michaela Coel, Tenoch Huerta and Martin Freeman.
The movie is not released worldwide yet, but reviews have come in from early screenings. Those lucky enough to be present have been overwhelmingly positive in their assessments.
