Raiders of the Lost Ark was released in 1981, and that was followed up by The Temple of Doom in 1984 and The Last Crusade in 1989.
After a 19-year hiatus, Ford returned to the role for a fourth installment, 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
That movie received a mixed reception from fans, but earned $790 million at the box office which led to plans for a sequel.
In May of 2020, James Mangold was confirmed as director of Indiana Jones 5, while he has written the screenplay alongside Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth.
Steven Spielberg and George Lucas will still be involved as executive producers.
At Disney's D23 Expo, Ford took to the stage and became emotional as he introduced the first footage of Indy 5 while confirming this will be his last outing as the legendary adventurer.
"I'm very proud to say this one is fantastic. Indiana Jones movies are about mystery and adventure, but they are also about heart," he said.
"We have a very human story to tell and a movie that will kick your ass!
"This is it! I will not fall down for you again!"

Not a lot is known about the fifth entry of the franchise beyond the cast which includes Ford, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Kretschmann, Boyd Holbrook, Shaunette Renee Wilson, Toby Jones, Antonio Banderas, and Olivier Richters.
For the fourth movie, shooting was largely kept to the United States, but the fifth has gone international.
Extensive filming has been completed in Scotland at locations in Biggar, Glencoe and Glasgow City Centre.
Other locations included London, Sicily and Morocco.
