Rancher Owen Daybright becomes embroiled in an emotional conflict with his stepbrother Lee Strobie. Countless times, he rescues his brother from dire situations and protects him from their father's wrath when Lee impregnates a woman. When the woman's brothers want to tell the father of the unborn child, Lee says that Owen is the culprit. Owen's protective feelings are put to the test when Lee ambushed him.

A lackluster Western that was probably made to fulfill everyone's contracts. Everyone does their job. It looks solid, but compared to other Westerns, the cinematography is rather poor. The actors are equally solid. No one plays poorly, no one really tries to make anything of it. And the script is simply good, without conjuring up a single remarkable moment (the evil brothers' motivation for killing Lancaster is rather weak, though; since they simultaneously want him to give his name to their sister and want to shoot him). It's an easily watchable, watchable entertainment that clearly hasn't put any heart into it and doesn't contain anything that will make me remember it for long.

Vengeance Valley isn't all that bad, but it also doesn't quite rise above the mediocre mark. The acting is a bit weak here and there, especially in some supporting roles, but thankfully, it's all about Burt Lancaster, who, even on autopilot, still manages to hold his own quite well. The valley where the film takes place makes for beautiful scenery, and combined with the large herds of cows, it creates a distinctly Western atmosphere. The story is somewhat simple, but it's well-crafted and captivating enough to provide a reasonably entertaining hour and a half.

However, this romantic image is soon shattered by dramatic events that have a profound impact on the lives and well-being of ranch owner Arch Strobie (Ray Collins), his son Lee (Robert Walker), and his stepson Owen (Burt Lancaster).
While the film's tenor changes, the atmospheric setting doesn't. The film is set in the atmosphere of the ranch and its surroundings. Within that setting, a family drama unfolds that occasionally becomes somewhat melodramatic, making the genre label "drama" quite fitting alongside the label "Western." There are no wild shootouts, saloon fights, or astonishing stunts in this film. The film's core revolves around the daily lives of simple people, people with human concerns. Only late in the film does any action emerge that resembles what you'd expect in a Western. By then, I was actually quite pleased that the melodramatic ban had been broken.
In any case, Vengeance Valley isn't a clichéd Western. The film is more of a drama than a standard Western. A number of dramatic scenes with a focus on the characters are characteristic of this. The turbulence often found in the action of other Westerns is found here primarily in the dialogue and the interactions between the characters. Here, you find it in the drama. Burt Lancaster delivers a good performance, playing not the tough gunslinger but an amiable cowboy with a good heart. Excellent for once. Vengeance Valley is, therefore, a fine film.
