Well directed and acted drama in which Mitchum proved that he could also play characters with more depth. Here he plays Jeff McCloud, a successful veteran of the rodeo circuit, who returns to his parental home after a serious leg injury and meets Wes Merritt [Arthur Kennedy] and his wife Louise [Susan Hayward]. When it turns out that Wes has ambitions in the rodeo world, Jeff offers to train and coach him for half of any prize money. Louise tries to dissuade Wes from a career in one of the most dangerous sports there is, but when the prize money starts pouring in, there's no stopping Wes. As Wes and Louise's relationship becomes increasingly strained, Jeff begins to take an increasing interest in Louise.

Kennedy lacks the ruggedness of a rodeo hero, but Mitchum holds his own against the then acclaimed Susan Hayward. Arthur Hunnicutt is entertaining as Jeff's right-hand man, someone who's seen it all before and tells colorful stories of the past. Nicholas Ray makes excellent use of the gloomy locations, the inserts of Kennedy and Mitchum during the rodeos are convincing and he makes good use of authentic images , especially that of the Pendleton Round-Up, the strong finale of this stylish drama.

Good film about a rodeo rider who accompanies a new rodeo rider due to an injury. Quite interesting to see the rodeo world of the time here. The 'sport' also produces some spectacular images. Enough dramatic developments both inside and outside the love triangle that arises here. The ending is a bit frayed.

Passing through Wyoming, I attended a rodeo some twenty years ago in the town of Cody, the so-called "rodeo capital of the world". The people around me in the stands were wildly enthusiastic, I a lot less. That also applies mutatis mutandis to this film, with a star cast, a number of rodeo competitions and a love triangle that never gets off the ground. I think Susan Hayward is just for the decoration of the party, because her role is not much.
