Abuse! Rape! Murder! Revenge! In a sense, all the ingredients are there for a classic western. But most of the action takes place off screen. What remains is a pretentious nonsense that gives away important plot points prematurely or sows confusion due to its non-chronological structure. Holger [Viggo Mortensen] is a Danish colonist, Vivienne [Vicky Krieps] a Frenchwoman who, as a child [Eliana Michaud], fantasized about Joan of Arc, a forest fairy and a knight on horseback. McLeod plays the brutal, cowardly, caricatured villain. Mortensen was responsible for the direction, the leading role, the screenplay and the musical score. Everything is slow, monotonous and deadly boring. This supposed western contains hardly any action and an excess of Mortensen moving at walking pace on horseback. Good night!

As an actor, director, screenwriter and composer, Viggo Mortenson deserves a great compliment as a creative jack-of-all-trades. Although he does not avoid clichés such as slamming saloon doors and raw cowboys, in The Dead Don't Hurt he mainly focuses on the relationship between the two main characters. Beyond that, the western hardly manages to rise above mediocrity. It's certainly not boring, but it is a bit too slow.

3.0 * More love than lead

The Dead Don't Hurt is a film with a western twist, but anyone expecting action and gunslingers will be somewhat disappointed. There isn't that much shooting. Once in the beginning and at the end and that's about it I think. It is more of a romantic film with the setting of a western.

Still, I thought it was a very entertaining film and I was never bored. This is also due to Mortensen's approach, who proves to be an excellent screenwriter/director. The story proceeds in flashbacks and forwards. The timing and duration are always right and he ensures that the viewer moves along nicely with the pace of the film.

Then, with Mortensen himself and Krieps, you have a beautiful duo whose chemistry radiates. It never gets dull, even the shared screen time is too limited for that. It also helps that Krieps plays a fascinating role as an independent, headstrong woman.
