The traveling judge Richard 'Rick' Thorne arrives in the village of Bannerman. Rick wants to clear this village of the criminal activities of the cattle baron Josiah Bannerman, but that becomes a difficult task because this village is in the hands of the Bannerman family. When youngest son Tom Bannerman commits a murder, Rick wants him arrested and convicted with a fair trial. Rick, however, faces a dilemma: the immense pressure of the Bannermans' opponents, who have no need for a fair trial, and Amy Lee, Josiah Bannerman's daughter, whom he has fallen in love with and does not want to lose.
