Cowboy plot

Living like a cowboy is what hotel worker Frank Harris (Jack Lemmon) has been dreaming about all his life. He is in love with Maria Vidal, a beautiful Mexican woman, but her father rejects him because he is not a 'real' man. Then it's enough for Frank. The woman of his dreams has returned to Mexico and he still works at the hotel. By lending money to tough cowboy Tom Reece (Glenn Ford), he can go with him to Mexico to work on a ranch, Vidal's! There he learns that the life of a 'lonesome cowboy' isn't quite what he expected or was looking for.

Not an overwhelming, dazzling western, but still a decent film in which the concept of "cowboy" is approached better than in many other films of the genre, where the characters have grown more with their weapon than with their job.

This creates a good atmosphere, I think, and also good acting. Glenn Ford, as we know him, is a lot softer than a John Wayne, and for Jack Lemmon it takes some getting used to seeing him in that outfit, but Lemmon was a class act, also in this role.

Good photography, music and fortunately also the occasional dash of humor. The romance is muted.

Just not a case. I think Lemmon is a fine and sympathetic actor, but he was out of place here. Not because he wouldn't have a cowboy look (that's not the role, after all) but purely because of his age. An actor in his early twenties should have been cast for this. The main theme is namely the youthful idealism against the cynical realism of the older fellow man. That layer would have been much stronger with a youthful actor.
Anyway, I could live with that, I thought that was still a good theme. But my appreciation started to waver when no more was said about the cowboy who was left alone in the Mexican bar, and even more so when Indians were very ostentatiously presented as cannon fodder . In the end, it all fell through his hooves at the end (pun intended) when Harris ogles at a this time white blonde lady, and also shoots a cockroach haha funny. What a rush. The theme was also barely rushed, and then boom ready. No, bad ending.
Can't give it enough, even though the film had potential.

I expected a bit more from this, especially the transformation of Lemmon from timid rookie to more or less experienced veteran was much too fast and not very believable.

The film is indeed original in terms of story and starting point.
