Nice romantic comedy between the blunt from the west (Wayne) who slowly thaws out and Jean Arthur, a girl with manners from New York.

The whole thing takes place somewhere in the 1930s, so no typical western ingredients, except for an impressive and massive fight in a saloon with comical stunts.

The film maintains a good level throughout the entire running time and alternates romance and comedy in time, so that neither element can become disturbing.

Despite playing Duke Hudkins in this film, John Wayne got his nickname "The Duke" much earlier. In his early teens, he lived in Glendale, California and had a dog named Duke. They were so inseparable that family and friends called them Little Duke and Big Duke. Wayne attended several theater productions in high school, and his nickname "The Duke" stuck. The film spent over $250,000 on advertising, making it one of the largest budgets ever used at the time. This was the last film for actress Nina Quartero.

Jean Arthur plays the role of Molly J. Truesdale, who is unable to find the right man despite her popularity. John Wayne is an attractive rodeo rider, but is unable to commit. Both characters firmly hold on to their personal beliefs, and that makes for some nice fragments every now and then. Not a great western classic, but still reasonably entertaining.

2.5 *
