Nice movie from Scott. A visual exercise in particular, you can see that from the many beautiful shots and playing with the lighting. Sometimes it seemed a bit inspired by Barry Lyndon in that regard. The last scene in particular is a true painting. Two of Napoleon's junior officers (of equal military rank) become embroiled in a personal feud for many years over an issue about a wounded sense of honour. They fight numerous duels but never end to a satisfactory outcome. In the background, the emperor's wars take place (the piece in Russia was again of an unearthly beauty) and finally his fall. Although the hatred between the two men is feverish and fiery, the plot remains too superficial and meager to be seen as a truly grand masterpiece. The relationship between the two main characters can even be called unrealistic. I have also seen enough good that justifies a 4* in my eyes.

The debut film (in terms of feature film anyway) by Ridley Scott. A director full of misses and toppers. The Duelist is a miss. The reference to Barry Lyndon has been mentioned several times, but only once. He wanted to make a similar film, but still misses the real look of the film. You have photographers and you have people with cameras... 2 years later he is really doing his thing and as a director he is so much more creative with the horror film Alien and the film Blade Runner on it.

Scott wants to tell a story in The Duellist as well as excel with images. And therefore misses in both cases. It's all quite distant and the images are quite dry. Not a memorable movie. Too bad, because there might have been more residents here.
