Superb story based on true facts about the pacifist York who is drafted during World War I, realizes the need to fight and becomes a hero. Gary Cooper received an Oscar for his role in this delicate, handsome film that juxtaposes images of pastoral America with battle scenes...

Yes, that Alvin York was one of a kind. And it seems to have actually happened! I just wonder if over time the story has not been exaggerated a little bit in favor of patriotism. Or am I on thin ice now?

Kind of hard to believe that Howard Hawks could make such a crap out of a movie.

Meager enough for Sergeant York, though. It's about a hillbilly (Gary Cooper) who manages to turn from a turkey-shooting freeloader into a great war hero who manages to capture entire battalions of Germans during World War I. It is infused with a hefty religious sauce and morality. The timing of making this film (1941) is also not entirely coincidental. This is nothing more than vulgar propaganda to get Americans more involved for WWII. Anyway, it had a few nice scenes, especially the beginning I found very decent and atmospheric. It can just about get through, shall we say .
