The fantastic story of ME Clifton James who played a crucial role in the preparations for D-Day. Clifton James was a humble actor who, as a soldier in WWII, entertained the troops with his impersonation of Field Marshal Montgomery. When Major Harvey [John Mills] sees the imitation, he devises a cunning plan which he presents to Colonel Logan [Cecil Parker]. They decide to deploy ME Clifton James as Montgomery's doppelgänger, hoping to make the Germans believe that the Allied forces are launching their expected invasion not in Northern France, but at Gibraltar.

ME Clifton James (obviously) plays himself and Monty and he proves to be an excellent handler of the screenplay which makes no attempt to make him a hero, but above all shows how - with the help of Harvey and Logan - he grew both physically and mentally groomed for a role that you can truly say saved thousands of lives. The screenplay also contains a pleasant but subtle sense of humour. A very pleasant reconstruction of a wonderful piece of war history.

Good film in which an actor with a physical likeness of Field Marshal Montgomery is offered the role of his life. A special true story with an even more special role of ME Clifton James who plays himself here (and also briefly Montgomery himself, whom he also played in real life). The movie keeps getting better and better.

If I hadn't known in advance that this film is based on real events (with the exception of the last fifteen minutes), I would have started this review by stating that with this production, English cinema rivals Hollywood in terms of unbelievable nonsense. But roughly speaking, this really happened, and with quite a decent result (60,000 German soldiers and a Panzer division "withdrawn" from the defenses of Normandy, if I am to believe John Mills' character).

The film itself is otherwise very well made with the right balance between suspense and British lightheartedness, and with a protagonist whose name is only mentioned at the very end of the cast list, but who fortunately does not pale in comparison to the experience and charisma of John Mills and Cecil Parker. Excellent entertainment with the bonus of lots of supporting roles from actors who would sometimes only get their own "claim to fame" in later years (ranging from the Carry on series to Dad's army ).

The only downside is that I found the coaxing of the fake Monty by Mills and Parker a little too fast: when you imagine what an undertaking that must have been in both preparation and execution (and what risks on German attacks he may have suffered) a little more doubt with Clifton James would have been understandable. Anyway, that was just a detail, and I enjoyed the whole of this film immensely.
