I was looking for a good movie about the American Civil War. Besides classics like Gone with the wind, The good the bad & the ugly of Lincoln, I quickly came across Glory. A film that apparently escaped me somewhat, despite a well-known cast and the necessary fame.

Glory revolves around a regiment made up of black Americans. Fortunately, there are a lot of well-known actors among them. While Morgan Freeman had to wait until 2004 for his first Oscar, here it is Denzel Washington who took the first of 2 won statues. In any case, both gentlemen outclassed the white leadership with actors Matthew Broderick and Cary Elwes. Broderick looks really young and is miscast at first sight. On the other hand, that's not a bad choice either. The real Robert Shaw was also the son of a wealthy family and just lived to be 25.

The whole is made quite fascinating and is reminiscent of the grand reconstructions of battles that you can regularly see somewhere by a lot of enthusiasts. That approach is somewhat professional, but it does look a bit like it for the viewer. Even though everything is nicely decorated, strong cast, fascinating story, interesting setting, ... it is not always easy to imagine yourself in the time of those days. It could have been a bit more, and probably this has gotten a bit worn through the ravages of time. I fear that a modern version will make it even more of a Hollywood spectacle.

A little more creativity with the cinematography (ironically it won an Oscar for this) and a little less James Horner and it would have been perfect.

Finally Edward Zwick went through his oeuvre because I think the good man has made wonderful films that should suit me very well. I've only ever seen The Last Samurai and I really liked it. The following weeks there are still a number of Zwick films on the program because this one was also very popular.

The American Civil War is usually a little less my thing, but this film has a good character building which gives the film that extra something. Yes, you are even going to sympathize with the soldiers here almost sincerely. Here and there there is some religious, uplifting speech, but it remains light and the atmosphere is just right.

I didn't see Freeman and Washington as themselves at all but as a real soldier and that deserves a kiss from the Miss and a seat ahead. Possibly their best role I've ever seen of both, because let me be honest, I've never been a big fan of Washington in particular.

Also very important in this film is the role of Colonel Shaw who makes a huge change in character and then bravely hastened his end. The final phase is a heroic ode to the 54th Regiment accompanied by beautiful music . I was right there myself so good was this ending. So fascinating entertainment, rated by myself with 4*.

Fine film about some historical facts including Robert Gould Shaw who commanded a regiment of 'negroes' in the American Civil War. The story is dramatized for the film, but that doesn't hurt me personally. Enough things are right, such as the Colonel himself and his family, the story about the pay, the battles and Fort Wagner. What remains is not so much a war film but a more than fine drama that more than adequately shows the American civil war and where the contempt for blacks is evident on all sides. Especially the moment of the looting led by Colonel Montgomery I'm like what kind of Twilight zone is this? Looting and throwing up is not allowed but one hand in common with a white man, even if these are opponents, after which he shoots one of his own. Unbelievable actually.

Fine roles from both Broderick and Washington. And in the end a more than good movie.
