The Man Who Finally Died plot
"Stanley Baker in A-C-T-I-O-N!"
At the end of World War II, a young soldier returns to his father's small Bavarian village. He is filled with despair when he learns that his father died after marrying a young woman and escaping from the communists. The young man listens, but he believes there is more than the story he is being told, and so he begins an investigation of his own. He then discovers that an important scientist has traded the place with his father.

To be honest, I bought the DVD with this movie purely because of the excellent cast.
Stanley Baker and Peter Cushing are some of my favorite actors and I love Nigel Green and Nial McGinnis in movies.
Eric Portman plays his role of the gruff police inspector so convincingly that I had to check whether it was really a German actor.
I hadn't looked at the roles of the supporting cast beforehand, otherwise I would have known better.
McGinnis is also quite adept at playing German characters, by the way.
In "Tarzan's Greatest Adventure" (1959) he did that no less than sublime.
Baker and Cushing not only acted strongly, both were also gifted with a splashing screen presence.
At first I don't see much of the name of director Quentin Lawrence, but while researching his career it turned out that he was mainly active as a TV director.
I have seen quite a few of the countless TV series he has worked on.
It's a shame his name hasn't stuck.
Interesting to see that he also directed a 4 part TV version of the same story, The Man Who Finally Died, in 1959!
The story itself is more than worth it.
Surprisingly strong even.
I hadn't seen the denouement for a long time.
The transfer to the Network-Studiocanal DVD is also excellent.
Only positives, well worth four * as far as I'm concerned.

Reasonable film about a man who returns to his hometown to investigate what happened to his father. The characters are too much in the service of the plot. But because of the mystery, the film remains entertaining (the story has quite a few twists).
