Strong start, but somewhere halfway through I got a little distant. Too bad, because the concept is strong, and Tilda Swinton in particular plays a strong role. If the other roles had been equally impressive and the timing and tension in the middle part had been better... Still a nice film.

Indeed, from a psychological point of view it is often implausible: Mother and son, for example, communicate very little with each other; ssh, the word gay is definitely not allowed to be spoken, and the guy with the video tape is also quite coincidental... Swinton is really strong in her role as a mother; how far as a mother she is willing to go to protect her son. She also awakens compassion and shame in her blackmailer, developing a special bond with him. . As far as I'm concerned, the son could have a bigger role in the whole. Apart from a few points of criticism, I still thought it was a well-directed film that was exciting in a special way. The Deep End deserves a much better average.

Still a film with some rather original inputs for what I'm used to watching. The game with the (sexual) identities lasts throughout the film up to and including the scene with the car accident without it ever being spoken. Well the videotape with Jonathan Tucker is of course more explicit than explicit.
Tilda Swinton wears the pants in this film as a woman, shall we say. The men in her family excel here in passivity (Tucker), fragility (the grandfather) and absence (the husband at sea). Some of her choices are debatable - such as the fact that she doesn't push her son into the true events of the fatal accident - but that makes for an entertaining movie. thriller? It never gets really exciting, but it is fascinating to watch. Perhaps because it has such a realistic edge thanks to the input of 'housewife' Swinton. She is someone who is completely devoted to her family. But towards the end there still seems to be passion in play. That can also be seen in the use of color (I suspect) when she starts to dress in red (passion) and her blackmailer/would be lover Goran driving around in a red car. Their scene at the car accident is therefore a masterful highlight of the film. Around Goran's character, I've been wondering all the time whether he was for the men or not. His last words seem to prove otherwise... but the mystery remains a bit as he was unable to finish his sentence.

So good to see once. Although I thought the tone of the film was perhaps a bit too mellow. On the other hand, that has more to do with my taste than with the quality of the film.
