Similarities indeed with Altman's great detective film, but unfortunately the lack of a certain plot drive in this film turns out less well. Certainly not annoying, but sometimes it all just drifts around aimlessly. Fortunately, Hackman plays very strong and the denouement is quite impressive.

Relatively unknown 1970s noir that is already starting to show up as a secret tip here and there.

Watching this movie felt like finding an old wine bottle in the cellar and carefully tasting it to see if it's still drinkable.

A beautifully matured wine to drink perfectly? or vinegar?

Delicious!! So the first option.

Typical seventies atmosphere with Hackman as a cynical private eye who plows an entire dung heap with a simple runaway command.

Little action, but atmosphere!! ambiance!! ambiance!!

Beautifully acted and largely set in the Florida Keys.

Also a nice quote when Mrs Hackman asks if she wants to go to Rohmer's Ma Nuit Chez Maud.

"I've seen a Rohmer movie once. It felt like watching paint dry."

As a thriller, Night Moves is not very impressive. The thriller aspect only functions optimally in the last twenty minutes. Only then does the superficial plot begin to move. Still, the film is interesting in certain areas. As a startling image of time, for example. Or as a psychological framework for human motivation.

Director Arthur Penn has the film partly set in the crummy Hollywood film scene. And that's interesting, because with previous films, Penn broke away from Hollywood movie conventions by pushing the boundaries of Hollywood film violence. His portrayal of the people is a presentation of a lot of opaque, lying and conniving persons. Behind the glamorous almost divine facade it is all about earthly greed and earthly envy.

Penn demands patience from the viewer. Lots of patience. The story passes calmly and thoughtfully, which is not full of tension arcs. Rather than focusing on exciting accents, Penn spends a lot of time detailing his protagonist's character. A private detective grappling with a marital and sense of purpose crisis. He is played by an excellent Gene Hackman.

Also interesting is the resonance of the current events that shine through the story. Watergate, Vietnam. Events that left their mark and turned society upside down. Those traces are visible in the film in the form of a natural mistrust that the characters manifest towards each other, as well as in the string of lies and intrigue that naturally surround the characters time and again.

Night Moves is not a spectacular or very exciting thriller and can even be called boring at times. The psychological subtext, the fascinating time frame and of course the exciting closing scenes make the film still worth watching.
