It's the magic of Alex Proyas that does it. You can clearly see that miniatures have been used in the overviews of the dark city. Just like with The Crow, by the way, but the result is oh so atmospheric. Too bad it's no longer the case with I, Robot. Together with The Crow, Dark City is one of Proyas' best works: dark, atmospheric and a strong story. These are movies I can't see often enough.

The stealing work of the makers of The Matrix is indeed obvious. I've read about it before, but I've never been able to confirm it. Dark City is much more mysterious than the successful copy from a year later and is therefore without a doubt my favorite. The comparisons about atmosphere and acting are superfluous: Dark City, Dark City. Even by science fiction terms, Dark City is very imaginative. As the Wachowski brothers clearly stole from Proyas, Proyas was also easily inspired. Of course you can see the connections of other great works, but the overall picture is quite original.

Rufus Sewell enjoys a fair amount of fame, but is otherwise an actor who rarely falls through the basket. So is Jennifer Connelly. Kiefer Sutherland and certainly William Hurt are different cases, but both gentlemen play an excellent role. Furthermore, enjoying the mystery, the mindfucks and the game with time and space. A must for science fiction fans. Terry Gilliam would have been proud.

What a wonderful movie!

A gem in its category.

Great plot, several strong characters, only some failing SFX every now and then.

This movie deserves a remake in 10 years. *4.0
