During a test with a race car, which uses an experimental oil engine, the driver is killed by an explosion. Stunt driver Larry "Lucky" Taylor is initially blamed for the accident, but is later acquitted. Taylor believes the engine design has a real chance of winning races, but the racing club has banned that experimental engine since the accident. Taylor devises a ruse to equip a race car with this engine for a race, without the race officials and Pat, the wisecracking daughter of engine designer Pop O'Shea, finding out.
