It is mainly the fact that things like this actually take place there on that Mexican border that makes Bordertown an interesting film. Jennifer Lopez does a decent job, but doesn't always come out on top. Antonio Banderas makes a nice contribution, but otherwise does not fulfill such a special role; not to mention the cameo Martin Sheen has. Fortunately, the other (Mexican) acting is doing well. Still, with such names in the house, you would expect that these three people would stand out in the film, but in the end it was not that bad.

Such a scene at the beginning is of course quite impressive (in the sense of shocking), but the part of Lauren who wants to score a good article slows things down a bit. In my opinion, the film should have focused more on the scandals that take place than Lauren and her relationship with Alfonso and the pressure from her boss. As a result, the film unnecessarily comes into contact with a number of clichés, which seemed completely unnecessary in a film like this.

All in all, I understand that the film should tie a bit of a story to it, but it got a little too 'American' at times. Perhaps a little more simplicity wouldn't have hurt the film. By that I mean that the Hollywood vicissitudes cause the film to jump from one topic to the next, while that might have been prevented by focusing a little more on one subject. Nevertheless, the film does not get boring and it gives a reasonable picture of what is happening in Mexico. Not only from the murders, but also, for example, the factories where the women work. And of course, the fact that someone tries to draw attention to these scandals always arouses sympathy.

3*

Nice thriller/drama that knows how to captivate and at times is even tense. The story is well put together and the same goes for the execution. Because of the impressive cast including Jennifer Lopez, Antonio Bandera and Martin Sheen, this film is lifted to a higher level than it actually is. In particular, lead actress Jennifer Lopez did well and it is of course not a punishment to watch her for almost 2 hours.
