Initially it seems that we are going to get a decent suspense film à la Hitchcock, but the development of the intrigue is rather confused, unbelievable and overall a bit messy with a simple ending and remains far below the level of the grand master.

Conrad Veidt's last film before he died of a heart attack on April 3, 1943. It was his second film with Joan Crawford after A Woman's Face. For Crawford, this was her first film with Fred MacMurray, and her last film under her long-term contract with MGM. The actress was frustrated that she was constantly being offered second-rate scripts, and ultimately chose to buy out her studio contract. More than two years later, she appeared in Mildred Pierce at Warner Brothers, for which she won an Academy Award for Best Actress in 1945. William Powell and Myrna Loy were initially cast by MGM. This in an attempt to get them out of the mold in The Thin Man. Clark Gable was also considered for the role of Richard Myles, but he turned down the offer. After Loy left the studio in 1942, the lead roles were assigned to Crawford and MacMurray. Crawford always wished Alfred Hitchcock had directed this film. "Above Suspicion" contains some Hitchcock elements such as mistaken identity, a musical plot and innocents recruited to perform dangerous tasks.

The film shows that Crawford's dissatisfaction was not entirely unfounded. This spy thriller has a great premise and a good cast, but halfway through it all starts to falter. Richard Thorpe was not one of the best directors at MGM, and used unnecessary scenes that distracted from the plot. Perhaps Alfred Hitchcock would have been the best director for the job. We later saw many elements from the film in the spy film Top Secret!. This made it much more difficult for me to take "Above Suspicion" more seriously. Nevertheless, it is quite entertaining.

2.5 *
