Nice to see that directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead are increasingly having access to a larger budget and professional actors per film, although this is somewhat at the expense of ideas and creativity. The film starts wonderfully mysterious and freaky, but gradually the plot and characters become more and more predictable and standard. Too bad, because visually the film has many beautiful surreal moments and Anthony Mackie is especially good here. The soundtrack is occasionally a bit too prominent, especially at the beginning of the film.

Not quite.

When I started the film I thought it would be a bit of a B-movie. But after the first scene you know that the directors want to be more. The atmosphere is also clearly the strength of the film. The gentlemen have now also attached quite a few big names to their film, and perhaps that is why this film goes a bit wrong. Because when the plot takes over, the film loses a lot of its shine. The acting of the gentlemen is on autopilot and the plot with a girl lost in time receives too much explanation in dialogue, making it more of a Nolan film than a musing Lynchian nightmare. Which it easily could have been and in my opinion should have been.

While my rating isn't high, this isn't a total no-no, it's certainly entertaining and some of the style choices are well done.

But it could and should have been more.

2.5 stars.

Fairly strong science fiction drama. The story is quite nicely put together. The effect is quite surprising. The film starts as a sci-fi mystery and turns out to be a nice drama with a light emotional charge in the second half. It is a bit predictable, but the directors still manage to touch the viewer. Mackie plays a strong role. Visually also of excellent quality. 3.5
