Lost in Space plot

"Danger, Will Robinson!"

Planet Earth's natural energy resources are gradually running out. A solution is urgent, because survival on the blue planet threatens to become impossible. The Jupiter mission to colonize the planet Alpha Prime seems the only alternative. Scientist Jack Robinson, his wife, his family and fighter pilot Don West set course for the only other planet on which life is possible. Their goal is to create a hypergate around Alpha Prime to ensure that all Earthlings can be quickly evacuated, without having to consider the fact that they would first be trapped light years in space. However, their plans are thwarted by Doctor Smith, who has his own goal of thwarting the mission to Alpha Prime.

Remake of an old series.

That is perhaps the biggest mistake, the story sucks and seems a bit too obviously divided into pieces with a cliffhanger in between. Furthermore, considering the scores (both here and imdb), I actually thought it was quite a decent film, with pretty good cgi for the time (last century anyway) and a decent cast - even Matt LeBlanc isn't that bad, and Hurt, Oldman and Graham are decent.

Visually it looks quite slick here and there, even by today's standards. So, the story.

Spy Kids in Space, that's what it comes down to in terms of style. A family goes on a space trip type Passengers (2016) and accidentally ends up in an unknown part of the universe where they experience all kinds of adventures. Typical action film for the youth. Definitely not a masterpiece, a bit low budget, but entertaining for sci-fi enthusiasts, a small 3*.

jeez.

Based on the poster, I expected a slightly more serious sci-fi. Not something very nerdy or profound, but something different than this toddler carnival. That was a bit disappointing.

Anyway, the characters are on the stupid side. LeBlanc is really crappy at this kind of work and what Hurt was trying to do was really hard. But come on, in the beginning it might still be something. Just persevere, try to get past the family tragically and hope that things would get better in space.

Not so ... Oldman reprogramming the robot (how plastic) is childish and it sets the tone for the rest of the film. Shameful effects, terrible acting and a silly plot are put down with a lot of noise, but it can't hide that this is just a bad film.

Not that I immediately think Hopkins is a great director, but this was a serious misfire.

0.5*
