Professor Barbenfouillis tries to convince his colleagues to take a trip to the moon. He finds five brave astronomers (Nostradamus, Alcofrisbas, Omega, Micromegas and Parafaragaramus) who agree with his plan. Together they build a rocket in the shape of a bullet and a large cannon that shoots them into space. After the astronomers land safely on the moon, they decide to explore it.

Undoubtedly the most famous work Méliès ever made. And rightly so, because Le Voyage Dans la Lune is unique in the science fiction world. Made at a time when it would take several decades before someone would end up on the moon, Méliès delivers a very entertaining adventure film. The rocket in the eye of the moon is an iconic image, but Le Voyage Dans la Lune is much more. Atmospheric, great decors and a fantasy that still appeals to the imagination so many years later.

4*

I may have seen a restored version, because that looked pretty decent for 1902. This one is also the oldest print I've seen, with a few years' lead. The images of the moon are well known, but otherwise I didn't know much about the film.

Still a pretty good film, refreshing too and even then apparently a fascinating subject for traveling to the moon. Still some nice technical effects with smoke and fire. Nice view also on the industrial city.

The camera, of course, static, as if it were purely stage (and maybe it was). And the film also shows which role patterns prevailed at that time. It was the men who went exploring, the women are just filler.

Fantastic pioneering work. The essence of film crammed into 15 minutes : you see the editing, special effects, the narrative, the sets, action and comedy. And for that time it even looks pretty too. Film buffs have seen all these elements applied hundreds of times in modern films. I also reflect that the dream of traveling to the moon was very prescient. Today's reality is the science fiction of a century ago.
