Crimes of the Future plot

"Surgery is the new sex."

In the near future, humanity will learn to adapt to the artificial environment. This new form of evolution changes the natural state of humans, transforming them and altering their biological composition. This controversial accelerated evolution syndrome is spreading at a rapid rate. The performance artist Saul Tenser embraces the changes and allows new, as yet unknown organs to grow in his body. Together with his partner Caprice, he then removes these organs in a performance that the government also watches.

The film is already running in Belgium. David Cronenberg is back with another movie. That in itself is good news, of course. Then there are messages that arouse attention with a 6-minute standing ovation in Cannes (although I saw a collage of news items with more ovations from Cannes, which people like to do there by default) and messages from people who left the room because they couldn't stand it anymore.

In any case, Cronenberg has a fascinating cast together with Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux and Kristen Stewart. The latter said that she did not know what the film was about. Let it be some consolation that I don't quite know either after seeing the movie. But I don't think that should be the case with a Cronenberg film. Especially Mortensen and Seydoux are in shape and you can also notice the stamp of Cronenberg. A change between the blockbusters and the rather dramatic arthouse. The film occasionally creates an uncomfortable atmosphere, although fortunately it is not to leave the room.

I must say that the cinematography is not that overwhelming. A pity, because the setting of Cronenberg is worth the effort and I don't think it comes out completely. The film is fascinating anyway and thanks to the main character still worth the effort. It's not the best Cronenberg, but it's a Cronenberg.

What a pity.

After 2 somewhat annoying films by Cronenberg, 1 of which I also did not watch, this project sounded good again. Unfortunately, the ailments of old age among film makers are irreversible in Cronenberg's work as well. Towards the end of life they seem to take themselves more and more seriously, and there are the faintest quasi-philosophical dialogues in them. He hardly makes any effort to create an atmosphere and we move from dialogue to dialogue. An additional disadvantage is that the early critics said that the roles were so crazy and the body horror was so awful. Unfortunately it is all very soft. Also thought it was an extremely missed opportunity that with the premise you don't get any further than a man with some ears and a woman with some cuts on the face...

Now give the money to his son.

2 stars.

Vintage Cronenberg, I would almost say, but I have only seen Naked Lunch, centuries ago, and although Crimes of the Future exudes the same atmosphere as the memory of NL, the basis for speaking of 'Vintage Cronenberg' may be somewhat shaky.

It's been two weeks since I saw CotF and the memory has faded a bit. Does that make this post less valuable? Can you only write a good review when a movie is still fresh in your mind? Or is it also interesting to mention what a film still means to you weeks, months, years after viewing?

What do I remember? An atmosphere that I would describe as robust. Strong contrasting colours, powerful images, muscle language. Monstrous machines, tentacles, blood. But no terrifying blood, the pain was not transferable, probably (?) because the characters felt no pain either.

I vaguely remember the plots and subplots. A murder of a child, a criminal (ideological?) organization of plastic eaters, espionage, mutilation, love, the night, performances. An image that has stayed with me, but hardly played a role in the film: youth in a dark alley, a knife in a shoulder, pleasure.

Also striking: the past in the film world is not just the present in our world, as with much meager science fiction. The time that passed between 2022 and the year in which the film is set has also become a thing of the past. It's nice how all those scientists go crazy with that old-fashioned device, which for us 21st century people lies in the distant, imaginary future.

No idea what Cronenberg wants to tell us with this film. Maybe it's a warning to something. Or is it just entertainment? In the latter case, as far as I'm concerned, he succeeded in his aim. I look back on it fondly.
