Ambitious sequel, less philosophical and intriguing, but definitely worth it in terms of visual approach and plot. Decent cast too. In the end, the special effects can still go through surprisingly well, with a particularly beautiful spaceship and a lot of complex scenes, especially for that time. Underrated movie, in my opinion.

I don't hear anyone talking about the sloppiness and incredulity in this film. Fasten seat belts at the very last moment while you have known for a long time that a gear is being deployed. Countdown in English while it's a Russian ship, Quick transfer while a boost is deployed.

No, even if you could see this film separately from 2001, it still isn't the best, precisely because too little attention has been paid to it. A scene like Bowman's mother is completely separate and could have been left out. The special effects are clearly worse than what was already possible in the sixties (compare for example the floating pens).

Had more attention been paid to it, I could have appreciated this “sequel” somewhat, but now there is very little left.

As a sci-fi film, regardless of the reputation of the film on which this is a sequel, it is in itself a fine film that fluctuates around 3* all the time, although the forced and unbelievable ending unfortunately detracts from that. Fairly good quality and engaging, much better than I expected. It doesn't have much to do with the original, this sequel connects to it in terms of story, but is much more straightforward and therefore much more accessible. It is an excellent space travel film about a Russian/American mission to the spaceship 'Discovery' (from the first part). While Russians and Americans work well together in space, they make things a lot more colorful on Earth.

Visually it is hardly outdated and also in terms of content, with two idiots as heads of government in Russia and the US, they were not far off in terms of future prospects. But because of the weak ending in my opinion, I'll give it a good 2.5 *, I would have preferred an open ending that keeps the mystery alive.
