Good film in which a number of artists and art collectors become captivated by the work of a recently deceased painter. An ensemble film that is both a satire on the art world (with the superficiality dripping from it) and a mystery with supernatural elements. Unfortunately, the two do get in each other's way here. A great cast and original it can certainly be called. Just not 4.0 stars.

A fine film that indeed, as ChantalParis points out, is undervalued, in our opinion. Perhaps a possibility is that the viewer(s) expect many shock effects in advance, preferably from the beginning of the film. That is not the point of this film. That while the story and execution are quite creepy as the film progresses. You don't need this length for a film with shock effects and horror stories either, it lasts just under 1 3/4 hours. The build-up, the introduction to the main characters takes a little longer and that benefits the film.
We had a great time with this "Velvet Buzzsaw" and we rate the film with a big 7!

But certainly not used to the full potential here. Velvet Buzzsaw sounds nicer on paper than it is in reality, and that has mainly to do with the fact that Gilroy never really manages to knead the different genres into one solid whole.
That and the fact that the criticism of the art world is really so easy and cheap that just about the entire first hour falls into the water. It may all be funny and quirky, but you've seen it so many times and Gilroy doesn't do more than add some funny caricatures.
The horror story that is then added in the second part is difficult to mix with the rest of the film, but it brightens things up a bit and provides some originality. Also makes the direction of the film more difficult to predict.
Not bad for once, it is also quite difficult to compare with other films, but this film could easily have been a lot better.
