Climax plot

"Birth and death are extraordinary experiences. Life is a fleeting pleasure."

In 1996, during a three-day rehearsal, twenty dancers gather in a remote place for a final choreography, followed by a party. With the help of a sangria mixed with LSD, the atmosphere gradually changes and there is a certain frenzy that grips the dancers all night. There is a certain tension in the room and while some think they are in paradise, most end up in hell.

Very cool, but with a but.

Climax is a small relief after Love. Noé doesn't exactly reinvent himself, but returns to his former madness. A nice emotional strip that does not stir up too nice feelings. Narrative is pushed aside, while the experience is given full attention.

In the meantime, Debie also deserves a co-director credit as far as I'm concerned. His input is essential to Noé's success and here again the camera work is 70% of the overall appeal. Some great tracking shots (Roma could learn something from them), the dance from above and all the creepy stuff in the background, visually it's clearly enjoyable.

I'm less positive about the whole 90s thing and the soundtrack. Cool tracks, it also works really well, but in 2019 not really the ultimate you should expect from a film like this. It also doesn't help that the heavier songs are sometimes forced into the background.

And then you have to ask yourself whether this still deserves to be the pinnacle of its genre. I have a feeling that Climax is so great because of the lack of direct competition, rather than that the cinema is pushed to its limits. I think you can just go tighter and harder these days, but of course you don't have to look at a 50-year-old Noé for that.

Thought it was a great movie, but with an asterisk. I'm actually kind of waiting for a successor to Noé. As long as there isn't, these kinds of films remain very cool of course, but where is that young generation that still manages to do a few extra things.

4.5* and a extended review
