Slasher + swinging sixties = swinging slasher. The stylish opening is immediately the best of the entire film. Unfortunately, this is not even matched afterwards. For a slasher, the atmosphere is too airy and the radiated joie de vivre is too great. The music score certainly contributes to that; looks a bit like Peter Gunn at times. A plus point is certainly the beautiful setting and the fact of the girls' boarding school. Typically a setting for a Bava or Argento giallo you would think. It is therefore a film that would normally be made by Mario Bava were it not for a quarrel with the production that stopped this. Although a number of elements are present to make it something strong, it remains only half-hearted and a bit too good. Even for such an early giallo we can be quite critical. The standard for this kind of film is therefore very high with what Mario Bava had already done with Blood and Black Lace. Although I still had fun with it in the end.

Director Antonio Margheriti apparently has little interest in building up tension. Most scenes take place in daylight and are accompanied by much too cheerful music. The man has little sense of atmosphere. The characters interest him more. In any case, he spends a lot of time on the actions of everyone. There is no real deep interest. Margheriti does not like layering. The characters are and remain superficiality itself. Nevertheless, some of them are not necessarily uninteresting by displaying obsessive or deviant behavior.

Nude…Si Muore is an Italian whodunnit/slasher. The murder scenes are not very explicit or spectacular. Not exciting. The whodunnit part only starts late in the film. A tense-looking inspector comes to investigate the murders in that part. It may not have been Margheriti's intention, but the inspector reminded me of Leslie Nielsen every now and then and that does not do a serious observation of the murder investigation any good. The inspector's arrival does not contribute to the creation of a tension arc either, but at least distracts from the dullness that is playing out on the screen.

It's still fun to see who the murderer is and then it's over. It's telling that while typing this message, a week after watching it, I don't remember who the murderer was.
